Nearly 23 million people in this country struggle with some form of substance abuse disorder, but less than 10% of those individuals actually get the help they need. Many factors dissuade them from seeking addiction treatment, but paying for drug rehab is one of the biggest. Fortunately, Crest View Recovery Center in Asheville works with most major insurance providers to minimize the financial burden of treatment.

The Affordable Care Act and Treatment for Addiction

Created in 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has made paying for drug rehab easier. The statute rightfully recognizes addiction as a mental disease, which in most cases is a pre-existing condition. In short, this means that insurance companies cannot deny individuals proper treatment.

In some cases, CVRC can work with your insurance provider to ensure that there are little to no out-of-pocket costs.

Using Insurance for Addiction Treatment

Again, many insurance companies offer coverage for substance use disorder treatment. So, it’s likely that your health insurance plan covers at least some addiction rehab services. Your policy, depending on the type of plan you have, might cover:

  • Inpatient addiction rehab
  • Inpatient drug and alcohol detox
  • Outpatient addiction rehab
  • Outpatient drug and alcohol detox
  • Partial hospitalization programs

Inpatient treatment, sometimes called residential treatment, requires individuals to live at the rehab center where they’re getting treated. While in a residential program, many people find that there is a low chance of relapse since they are in a drug- and alcohol-free environment.

An outpatient treatment program does not require people to live at the rehab center. So, some individuals live at home while getting treatment through an outpatient program. However, many people may live in a sober living facility. This living arrangement is especially helpful in cases where people do not have a support system at home.

Both inpatient and outpatient programs include various therapy approaches, including behavioral therapies and holistic therapies. Through these components of treatment, people can gain the skills they need in order to maintain sobriety.

Rehab programs vary from one treatment center to the next. So, it’s important to find out as much as you can about the rehab centers you’re considering. Before you make your decision, it’s best to figure out if the treatment facility offers therapies and programs that will benefit you. Also, be sure to find out whether or not your insurance plan will work with the facility and be paying for the drug rehab services..

Again, the type of coverage you receive will depend mainly on the plan you hold with your health insurance company. The amount of treatment costs your plan covers can help you to determine which rehab facility is best for you. After all, the financial aspect of treatment is also important to consider when looking for a treatment center that meets your needs.

Insurance Companies That Cover Rehab

As stated before, the Affordable Care Act made it easier for individuals to get coverage for substance abuse treatment. Still, it’s important to understand that each insurance provider is different. Since this is the case, it’s best to know the details of your plan’s coverage policy in order to know whether or not your treatment process will be affordable for you.

Some of the insurance providers that may be able to help you cover the costs of treatment for addiction include the following:

AmeriHealth

Since 1995, AmeriHealth has been providing health coverage in the state of New Jersey. With its headquarters in Cranbury Township, NJ, AmeriHealth offers coverage for mental health services as well as addiction treatment services. In most cases, plan holders must get preauthorization from AmeriHealth before beginning a treatment program. This means that the insurance company wants to first make sure that your treatment is medically necessary.

AmeriHealth offers Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, Point of Services (POS), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, and Medicare programs.

If you do need treatment for substance abuse, AmeriHealth will likely provide coverage for in-network care providers. Out-of-network providers might not be covered. But, it’s best to speak with your insurance company about the details of your plan. You can also contact our professional staff here at Crest View Recovery Center. We’ll work with you to make sure you get the help you need in order to get treatment.

BlueCross BlueShield

Commonly called BCBS, BlueCross BlueShield is a nationwide insurance provider. They provide coverage for about 105 million families and individuals. BCBS often covers detoxification, PHPs, and outpatient programs.

The amount of coverage you can receive from your BCBS company depends on the type of plan you have with them. This company offers bronze, silver, gold, and platinum plans. Generally, the platinum plan has the lowest deductibles but the highest monthly cost. Bronze plans, on the highest deductibles with the lowest monthly cost. In many cases, in-network providers are covered by BCBS plans. But, services from out-of-network providers don’t usually have coverage.

BlueCross BlueShield also offers a Federal Employee Program. The program has two plan options, which are Basic and Standard. In many cases, individuals who have the Basic plan option have to use the services of preferred provider organizations (PPOs). Members who have a Standard plan option may be able to have a little more flexibility, choosing non-PPO services if they desire.

As with any insurance plan, it’s important to check directly with your provider to make sure that you have coverage for the addiction treatment services you need. You can also reach out to us here at Crest View Recovery Center to learn more about how we work with BCBS!

Cigna

Cigna, an international insurance provider, serves over 80 million customers. They provide coverage for inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization, and addiction detox. Cigna plans vary in regards to paying for drug rehab, depending on the type of plan a person holds.

In many cases, out-of-network service providers are not covered by Cigna. Sometimes, however, there may be some coverage options for non-network facilities. It mainly depends on the type of plan an individual has with Cigna.

Inpatient Treatment (In-Network Providers)

A Bronze plan from Cigna generally has a 0% coinsurance for services from providers that are within Cigna’s network. So, if an individual has a Bronze plan, he or she must pay their deductible in full before Cigna covers the rest of the costs involved.

Individuals who have Silver plans with Cigna usually have somewhere between 30% and 50% coinsurance. A Gold plan typically has a coinsurance of 20-50%. Finally, a Platinum plan generally has a 10-30% coinsurance

Outpatient Treatment (In-Network Providers)

Cigna’s Bronze plans may have a 0-50% coinsurance. Their Silver plans typically have either a coinsurance or a copay. Gold Cigna plans, similar to Silver plans, may have either a coinsurance or a copay. Platinum plans usually have lower coinsurance percentages or copays.

About Coverage for Detoxification

Addiction detoxification, more commonly known as detox, is a process that begins many treatment programs. During the detox process, individuals who have struggled with alcoholism or drug abuse can start their journey to recovery. Detoxification is the process of cleansing the body from the harmful poisons left by alcohol and drugs.

Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol can cause toxins to flow freely throughout the body. This can be harmful and dangerous to those who use these substances regularly. But, this is where detoxification comes in.

While people are going through the detox process, they may find that they are becoming more physically free from substance dependence! Still, this is only the beginning of the treatment journey.

Thankfully, many health insurance providers cover detoxification programs. So, those who wish to start moving toward total recovery through a detox program may be able to pay for their treatment with help from their insurance plans.

Insurance Coverage for Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment

When it comes to getting treatment for substance abuse, there are two main types of treatment. These include inpatient and outpatient programs. Inpatient treatment, or residential treatment, usually involves individuals staying at their rehab facility. While they live away from home, those in rehab can develop the relapse prevention skills they will need. They can also build strong support systems, which may not exist at home. Finally, people in residential treatment have access to 24/7 medical and professional care.

Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, doesn’t require people to live at their treatment facility. This means that individuals in outpatient rehab can live at home while getting treatment. It also means that people can work, go to school, and tend to family responsibilities throughout their treatment. Still, individuals usually have to attend therapy sessions and get treatment for several hours during the week.

Both inpatient and outpatient treatment services are usually covered by health insurance companies. Some may have varying coverage options depending on whether you choose a residential or outpatient program. So, again in regards to finding ways of paying for treatment, it’s best to speak with your insurance company when looking for a drug rehab center.

Using Insurance Mental Health Services

Often, people who suffer from substance abuse also live with mental health disorders. Many health insurance providers understand this and offer coverage options for mental health services.

Some of the mental illnesses and disorders that often co-occur with addiction include the following:

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Stress disorder
  • Trauma
  • Schizophrenia
  • Major depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

When a person has co-occurring disorders, he or she has what is called a dual diagnosis. It’s important for those who have an addiction and mental health challenges to get treatment that addresses both of these matters.

This is because, in many cases, mental health and addiction affect one another. Sometimes, alcohol or drug use can intensify the symptoms of mental illness. In other cases, the challenges people face because of mental health disorders cause substance use habits to worsen.

With that being said, it’s important for individuals to go through a dual diagnosis program or get treatment that will deal directly with each of their challenges.
