Addiction Statistics in Tennessee
Unfortunately, there were 1,269 deaths due to overdose in Tennessee in 2017. Synthetic opioid use caused quite a few fatalities, with fentanyl being one of the main problem substances. In fact, the number rose from 77 to 590 between the years 2012 and 2017. Also, the number of heroin-related deaths jumped from 50 to 311 in the same period of time.
There were nearly 16,000 outpatient visits and over 7,700 inpatient visits for nonfatal drug overdoses in 2017. In 2018, there were 1,304 overdose deaths.
According to a 2017 article, over 5% of those who live in Tennessee struggle with alcohol and/or drug abuse. That equates to about 400,000 people.
