Movies and TV shows let many people paint a completely false image of how rehab works and can scare many away from reaching out for the help they need. At Crest View Recovery Center, we’ve cultivated a comfortable, intimate facility with spacious rooms and opportunities for growth.

Still, staying in an inpatient facility is not the only way to receive treatment for substance abuse. Outpatient rehab can be an excellent option when you have a job, family or life you cannot or don’t want to leave. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) helps treat substance abuse in a supportive environment.

What Is Substance Abuse?

While substance abuse and addiction often go hand-in-hand, they are distinct issues. You can abuse substances without being addicted to them. However, if you have an addiction, you’re likely abusing substances. Abusing substances means you’re using substances in a way that’s different from its intended purpose. In cases of addiction, this generally means overindulging in alcohol or other drugs.

There’s an easy test for you to determine whether your substance abuse is turning into an addiction. Try to go without using for a weekend. If you experience any of the following, you should reach out for help with your addiction:

  • Constantly thinking about using substances
  • Feeling withdrawal symptoms like shakiness, anxiety or fever
  • Needing to abuse substances to offset withdrawal symptoms

Another way you can tell is to look at how substance abuse affects your everyday life and the lives of people around you. Consider these questions:

  • Do your family and close loved ones avoid seeing you due to your use?
  • Do you miss events or avoid going places so you can use substances instead?
  • Has indulging in substances caused financial difficulties?
  • Have you faced setbacks at work or school because of your focus on substance use?
  • Have you gotten in legal trouble for using substances?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re likely dealing with a substance use disorder that’s turned into an addiction. Getting professional treatment is the safest way for you to recover.

What Does Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Look Like?

Most people go through outpatient therapy for about 4-6 weeks. During that time, you’ll come to Crest View Recovery Center three times a week for three-hour sessions with your treatment team. Throughout your substance abuse intensive outpatient program, you may go through several therapies:

You’ll also have access to our on-site psychiatrist. Our psychiatrist can help you manage symptoms by prescribing medications if you suffer from a co-occurring disorder, or another mental illness on top of addiction. Otherwise, the psychiatrist can help you through stressful times, like losing a loved one.

Our Substance Abuse Program

There are two ways to join our IOP. The first and most common way is to join as a stepping stone in returning to your life. These patients have gone through our inpatient rehab program in anywhere from 30-90 days, followed by our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Each “step” of this treatment plan gets less intensive so individuals can slowly reacclimate to their life as a sober person.

The other way people join this program is if they’ve been misusing a substance for a short time but recognize they need help now. In situations like this, inpatient treatment may not be necessary, and an outpatient program can allow them to get treatment without pressing pause on their life.

However you or your loved one gets here, our team is ready to help you manage the real world with reality therapy, a form of treatment that walks you through real-life scenarios, so you can learn to respond to them without using substances to cope. It could be as simple as going grocery shopping, or you may challenge your resolve by working through a party scenario where you’re faced with dangerous behaviors. We can help you find the root of your addiction and customize your treatment based on your needs.
